Headline: Climate change stops home plan
Australian Financial Review, pg 3. Lisa Carapiet. 6 August 2008.
Victoria's Civil and Administrative Tribunal has rejected an
application to build six coastal homes in South Gippsland Shire, saying
the effects of global warming would make the land 'unsuited for the
proposed development.'
The Environment Defenders Office Victoria say the decision is significant to many developments along the coast, while Martijn Wilder, head of Baker & McKenzie's climate change practice and chairman of the NSW Climate Change Council said courts and insurers would increasingly take climate change issues into consideration. Mr Wilder noted that insurers such as Insurance Australia Group are already publicly saying many coastal areas are being affected by severe weather more frequently.
